Open letter to the city council of Ghent

Bring 300 refugees from the Greek islands to Ghent and give them shelter.

To the City Council of Ghent,

Since the closure of Europe’s borders, more than 42,000 refugees have been living in severely inhumane conditions on the five Aegean Greek islands. The shelter capacity has already been exceeded six times. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 on the island of Lesbos, a gigantic medical-humanitarian disaster is now becoming a real threat. We can no longer stand by and do nothing about this abuse and we therefore urge our city to take action.

Ghent is a city that does not close its borders nor eyes to humanitarian disasters. It is a supportive city of solidarity, a city that welcomes others with open arms and values ​​human rights; including the rights of individuals seeking refuge. We are therefore very pleased with the letter from the Eurocities-cities to the Presidents of the European institutions “to assist the 5,500 unaccompanied children who are detained in refugee camps in Greece in precarious conditions”. In this letter, Ghent declares its willingness to “offer them shelter, safety, medical care and support”. That is a very powerful signal. We therefore ask our city to live up to this declaration.

To enact this declaration is an important step in cross-border solidarity. Nevertheless, why should we limit ourselves to the group of unaccompanied minors? Is not every person equally entitled to shelter, safety, medical care and support? Is this not a universal right? In collaboration with other cities, it is ethically dignified to take the next logical step and as Solidarity Cities to not let anyone down!

As a city of solidarity, let us, together with other cities, provide a home for people who are seeking refuge and are trapped in the no man’s land of the Greek islands. Specifically calculated: if we send out an Airbus 330, we can save 300 people. If a hundred European cities follow the example of Ghent, this humanitarian crisis will be averted. This way, we can continue to look at ourselves in the mirror with the reassurance that human rights take precedence over self-interest.

At the European level, redesignation among Member States was promised, but this promise was not kept. On the contrary, the development of Fortress Europe has in fact created a humanitarian crisis, which we as citizens do not accept. The Belgian government is equally passively watching how people seeking refuge are forced to survive in increasingly inhumane conditions. It is therefore up to the cities to outline their decisiveness and vision for the future. A solidary and committed city like Ghent is ideally placed to take on a pioneering role in this endeavor.

Respect for human dignity should also be upheld in Corona-times. The justified fear of a virus like COVID-19 should not be a barrier that lets people perish at our outer gates – neither at the gates of the medieval city, nor at those of our contemporary European Fortress. On the contrary, it must be the reason for urgent action to avoid even worse suffering and a new wave of infections!

The City Council of Ghent can therefore play an inspiring, hope giving pioneering role by accommodating a group of refugees in our city. Our city can handle this, if its policy makers are willing to find solutions and work together. Because people from Ghent care about the well-being of other people, no matter where they come from. We will never surrender when it comes to values ​​such as solidarity, warmth and humanity.
